The 120-ECTS major in Communication Studies was reformed in the 2015/16 winter semester and accredited by Acquin in September 2016. The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies program leads to a first professional qualification within six semesters. It thus enables students to either enter the workforce quickly or continue their education in a master's program in Germany or abroad.

Communication science is concerned with the emergence and impact of media-mediated communication. The focus of research is therefore on mass communication through the mass media. The bachelor's degree program at the Munich Institute for Communication Science and Media Research is not a practical media training program, but rather an academic course of study. Using empirical research methods, students analyze problems, contexts, structures, and mechanisms of influence in the mass media and public communication. Through scientific reflection, students become experts in public communication processes and thus acquire sound key qualifications for careers in communication. Two mandatory internships at media companies enable students to apply the knowledge they have acquired and thus facilitate their entry into professional practice.
